Jennifer — I feel for you! It takes the shine off a trip when you start anticipating the misery before it even starts! I have had some success with saying I want to drive. He has acquiesced and that usually works out pretty well. But once, recently, when he was terrifying me, he pulled over angrily and insisted I drive. The problem was, I can’t see well at night and it got dark about an hour before we got home. I was so terrified of my OWN driving that I was gripping the steering wheel with white knuckles! It was awful! I nearly fell apart when I walked through the door.
I hope you will find a way to express to him that your fear is real and make him feel like it’s more about you than his driving. Maybe he can hear that. My husband can’t stand to feel criticized, so it helps to make it about me. It’s a miracle that any of us make it home alive as many men are out there who drive like maniacs. Please let me know how it goes and if you can find a solution. We are all in this together! (Read the comments above!)
Hugs and prayers for a safe journey. ♥ Beth
