The amount we need in retirement depends a lot on how much debt we carry. My husband and I live in a low tax state and our house payment is less than $600 and we carry no credit card debt. We can get by on less than someone who has a high house payment or rent and carries a lot of debt. We fall at the low end of middle class according to the chart, but we are very comfortable.
