Why Do We Have to Get Sick to Slow Down?
I’m enjoying having a cold because I have permission to rest
We have recently moved and we have been busy from dawn to dusk for four months now. We are still not completely settled and I feel like we won’t be for several more months. That’s why when I started getting a sore throat I thought, “Oh no! I don’t have time to be sick!”
But then it occurred to me that this means a chance to slow down and breathe. (Well, I can’t breathe, but you know what I mean.) I can sit on the couch and read, and watch YouTube videos, and play Wordle without any guilt at all. I can take naps and drink lots of tea. I can snuggle with my kitty. All the things I love to do but have not been allowing myself to do because there are so many things that are demanding my attention and energy.
My husband has been up for hours most mornings before I can even get my first cup of coffee. He’s ready to get busy because he’s been up so long which makes me feel like I need to fall in step and do my share, foregoing my slow mornings. His Yankee work ethic cannot allow any downtime until all the work is done.
But suddenly, I’m off the work roster. He told me I couldn’t go outside in the cold, that my job was to stay in, stay warm, and get well. He went out and bought soup yesterday and came home…
